Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam, who was arrested from his residence at Rajpur municipality 1 in Rautahat district Sunday morning on charge of murdering 14 persons, has lost the status of lawmaker.
Two persons were killed and over a dozen injured in a bomb explosion at Pharhadawa of Rautahat on April 9, 2008 before the first Constituent Assembly (CA) election.
A complaint was filed claiming that the explosion occurred while making bombs to help Alam win the election and he burned 11 injured persons in the furnace of a nearby brick factory alive to cover up the incident. One of the complainants was later murdered.
Alam was arrested on Sunday for all those 14 deaths.
He will not be able to exercise any right of the lawmaker while his remuneration and benefits have also been stopped after the police informed the federal parliament secretariat about his arrest.
Clause 244(3) of the House of Representatives (HoR) regulations states one cannot do any work in capacity of lawmaker or exercise right of lawmaker if information is received about arrest of the person for criminal offense. The regulation stops remuneration, and perks and benefits of such lawmakers during the stay in police custody.
He will be suspended only if the court finds him guilty and the position will be vacant after that. He will remain in police custody with the logo of federal parliament until then.
