Prime Minister Balen Shah and Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal are set to travel separately to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Khanal will arrive in New York on September 21.
As high-level conferences and meetings are scheduled to begin on September 22, Khanal is scheduled to reach New York a day earlier.
PM Shah, meanwhile, will arrive in New York two days later, on September 23.
He will address the UN General Assembly on September 24 and depart for Kathmandu the following day.
Foreign Minister Khanal will remain in New York for additional meetings following the General Assembly and is scheduled to leave for Nepal on September 28.
Nepal had initially planned to participate in the General Assembly at the foreign ministerial level only.
The Cabinet had made a decision accordingly. However, following the Bhotekoshi flood on August 26, pressure mounted on the prime minister to raise the issue of climate justice at international forums. Preparations for PM Shah’s visit began thereafter. A short visit was subsequently scheduled on the wish of PM Shah himself.
The ministry said that a 15-member Nepali delegation will travel to the United States to attend the General Assembly. The delegation will include the foreign secretary, PM Shah’s chief advisor Kumar Ben, Foreign Ministry officials, and members of the prime minister’s personal security detail.
According to a Foreign Ministry official, it has not yet been decided whether PM Shah will hold any meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Therefore, no sideline meetings have been scheduled so far.
