Nepali Communist Party (NCP) leader and former prime minister Jhala Nath Khanal has urged party coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal and co-coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal to step aside and pave the way for new leadership.
In a written appeal, Khanal pointed out that despite the announcement of unification between the CPN (Maoist Center) and the CPN (Unified Socialist) a long time ago, genuine unification has not yet occurred. He also cited the party’s defeat in the House of Representatives elections held on March 5 as another key reason for his demand.
The unification between the two parties was originally announced on November 5 last year.
"You have not been able to complete the party unification process for such a long time. In the meantime, the balance of political power in the country has shifted, but there has been no concrete analysis of this," Khanal stated. "No new political direction, policy, or ideology has been put forward to address the new circumstances.”
He further said that the party leadership has also failed to provide clear direction to party cadres and the public on how to move forward.
“All these developments show that you have not been able to restructure, build, or lead the party. Under such circumstances, it will be difficult even to guide the party in an orderly manner until the general convention. Therefore, the coordinator and co-coordinator should convene a special meeting and make way for new leadership,” he stated.
Khanal also called for the party committee to be empowered to elect a new coordinator who is capable, qualified, and ideologically strong.
Furthermore, he proposed transforming the current committee into a national general convention organizing committee.
