Nepali Congress leader Purna Bahadur Khadka has issued a statement in his capacity as the party’s acting president, asserting that party membership is not something that can be revoked through a speech based on a leader's impulse or whim.
The NC central committee formed through the special general convention is preparing to update active memberships throughout the month of Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May).
The committee is preparing to record the names of those who do not update their membership during this period and bar them from participating in the 15th general convention in September if they fail to obtain a Congress ID from their respective wards.
Leader Khadka issued a statement on Monday expressing his dissent against this preparation.
NC President Gagan Thapa, while speaking at province-level election reviews, had said that active memberships would be updated throughout Baisakh, and that those who fail to do so would have their names archived and be barred from participating in the upcoming general convention.
Targeting those remarks, leader Khadka stated: "Party membership – obtained by risking one's life during the partyless, autocratic Panchayat system when the Nepali Congress was banned – is not, and cannot be, a matter that can be revoked by a leader through speech driven by impulse, excitement, or whim. This membership is not tied to the victory or defeat of any leader; it is a historical document linked to the fight for Nepal's national independence, sovereignty, democracy, and civil liberties, as well as the contribution of fighters and the honor of the families of martyrs."
