The new central committee was elected at Bhrikutimandap after talks with NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, which began Sunday morning itself, failed to yield results.
The faction organizing the Special General Convention had proposed that Deuba retire from his active role in the party. They further proposed that NC should declare Thapa as the future prime minister and contest the upcoming elections under his leadership. Deuba and leaders from his faction did not agree to these terms.
Immediately following this deadlock, the NC central committee meeting held at the party headquarters in Sanepa took disciplinary action against three leaders. The meeting decided to suspend General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, along with Joint General Secretary Farmullah Mansur, removing them even from their ordinary membership of the party.
The Special General Convention then proceeded to elect the new party leadership after disciplinary action against the three leaders.
