The Nepali Congress has issued a press statement urging its members not to participate in the special general convention announced for next week.
Party Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel issued the statement on Wednesday, calling on party members to refrain from taking part in the special general convention.
“Since any activities carried out in the name of a convention or special general convention called personally by office-bearers or members are against the party statute, the Nepali Congress makes a heartfelt appeal to office-bearers and members at all levels of the party, including Mahasamiti members, general convention representatives, as well as office-bearers and members of sister and well-wisher organizations, Nepali public liaison committees abroad, not to be involved in such activities,” the statement read.
More than 54 percent of general convention representatives have announced that they will hold a special general convention from January 11. Targeting that move, the party has asked members not to attend the event.
The Nepali Congress has also clarified that no individual has the authority to call a special general convention.
"While the Nepali Congress central working committee has unanimously prepared a schedule and is conducting the process and programs for conventions and the general convention, the party's serious attention has been drawn to reports in various media that a special general convention of the party has been called, ignoring the fact that the justification for the special general convention demanded within the same period has ended," the statement says. "In this context, it is clarified that, as per the party statute, the authority to call a convention of any level or a special general convention rests solely with the party's central working committee and not personally with any office-bearer or member."
According to Section 17 (2) of the party statute, a special general convention must be organized within three months of signatures being submitted.
