Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has become active again.
After undergoing further treatment, Deuba returned home from Singapore on November 14.
Upon returning, Deuba has initiated efforts to resolve differences within the party.
On Saturday evening, he met some office-bearers and central members close to him.
On Sunday, he met General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma.
During the meetings with leaders, Deuba emphasized the need to unite the party and move forward.
"The president has met with leaders," spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat told Setopati. "His stance is that we must unite and focus on the elections."
However, Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka is the one continuing efforts to consult with leaders and seek consensus on issues including the general convention date.
Spokesperson Mahat said that they have conveyed to President Deuba the view that active membership should be finalized by mid-December to mid-January and the 15th general convention held between mid-April and mid-May after the elections.
Deuba has urged everyone to support the acting president and to make a unanimous decision through the central committee.
On October 14, Deuba had attended the central committee and assigned the responsibility of acting president to Vice-president Khadka.
After the Deuba couple’s return from Singapore, discussions have already taken place between President Deuba and Vice-president Khadka on internal party matters and contemporary political developments.
During the Gen Z movement on September 9, protestors had attacked the Deuba couple, leaving them injured.
Although leaders have been expressing their views in the central committee for a month, no decision have been made yet.
The central committee meeting has been called again for Monday afternoon. President Deuba and Acting President Khadka are working to build consensus before that.
The main disagreement is over the general convention should be held before the elections or not.
Since 54 percent of the general convention delegates had submitted their signatures to the acting party president on October 15, demanding a special general convention, there are calls to initiate the process accordingly.
In such a situation, President Deuba has become active again. He held discussions with leaders to reach a decision through consensus.
Although outgoing House of Representatives members have launched a signature campaign demanding the reinstatement of the House, Deuba appears to be in favor of elections.
The government has scheduled the House of Representatives elections for March 5, 2026. Before that, the National Assembly elections will take place on January 25. Some current and former office-bearers from the Deuba faction believe it is not possible to hold the general convention now as the party should begin preparations for the two elections.
However, General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma are in favor of holding either a regular or special general convention before the elections.
