The central committee meeting of the CPN (Maoist Center) has concluded with the decision to dissolve the central committee and hold a general convention in mid-December.
The central committee meeting, which began in the capital on Thursday and concluded on Friday, transformed the Maoist central committee into a general convention organizing committee, with Chairman Dahal as its coordinator.
"It has been decided to transform the current party office-bearers into the secretariat of the organizing committee," said Maoist Center spokesperson Agni Sapkota, "A decision has also been made to form a powerful commission to investigate the property of party leaders and cadres."
Sapkota further said that the property investigation would begin with the office-bearers, and that a decision was made to approach the management of the office, secretariat, and families in an entirely new manner.
"The general convention will take place in mid-December," he said.
The two-day Maoist central committee meeting passed Chairman Dahal’s proposal with amendments, while rejecting the proposals of leaders Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Janardan Sharma.
Senior Vice-chairman Shrestha had proposed holding the general convention only after the election scheduled for March 5, 2026, and also said that he should be appointed as the party’s acting chairman.
Deputy General Secretary Sharma had proposed forming a new team without including any of the current office-bearers.
"Let's transform the current office-bearers into a steering committee," Sharma had said in his proposal.
The meeting rejected the proposals of both Shrestha and Sharma.
While responding to questions raised by participants, Chairman Dahal urged them not to interpret his actions as an attempt to remain chairman again.
After leaders like Shrestha and Sharma asked him to step down from leadership, Dahal said, "I believe that saying I will step down after so many years or that stepping down would bring peace is not the case. But let it not be misunderstood that I am trying to hold onto the chairmanship or that holding the general convention has malicious intent. Dear comrades, let there be no suspicion at this level."
He said that since the party was not in a position to transform in a normal manner, there was no alternative but to take the debate and discussion down to the grassroots level.
According to information provided by leaders who attended the meeting, Dahal said, "Ultimately, the solution is to take the debate and discussion to the grassroots, to focus the thoughts and feelings of thousands and millions of party members, to bring them together to the general convention through conferences and delegate elections. There can be no greater democratic practice than this."
