Surendra Prasad Singh, Sarlahi district president of the Nepali Congress, has resigned from his post.
NC Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel told Setopati that Singh resigned from his post on Friday.
He had been convicted by the Supreme Court in a forest case. Despite being found guilty, he had not stepped down as district president, for which he had been facing criticism within the party.
In the recent central committee meeting, leader Shekhar Koirala had also raised this issue.
"A person who has been convicted by the Supreme Court is still holding the post of district president of Sarlahi. For what reason has he not been removed? Have the president and the office-bearers understood how much damage this incident has caused to the Congress?" Koirala had said, targeting NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, in the central committee meeting on June 30.
Earlier, on January 26, party leaders and workers from Sarlahi, including former district president Laxman Raya, had staged a sit-in at the NC central office in Sanepa, demanding Singh’s dismissal.
Before that, they had submitted a memorandum to NC Chief Secretary Paudel at the central office on December 24, 2024, demanding Singh's removal from the post of district president.
On February 27, 2024, the Supreme Court had convicted Singh of the crime of committing corruption by destroying forests.
The Supreme Court had sentenced him to imprisonment for four months and 15 days. But Singh remained in the post of Sarlahi district despite the conviction.
According to the Political Parties Act and the Nepali Congress statute, a person convicted of a criminal offense by the court is not eligible to remain an ordinary member of the party.
