The first edition of Sagarmatha Sambaad (Sagarmatha Dialogue) is scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from May 16 to May 18.
At a press conference held on Tuesday at the Singha Durbar, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba said that 175 foreign guests will participate in the Sagarmatha Dialogue, News Agency Nepal reported.
The event will have a total of 350 participants, including parliamentary deputy speakers and ministers, she added.
Minister Rana said that foreign high-level delegates participating in the dialogue will pay courtesy calls on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and hold sideline meetings with counterpart ministers.
According to Minister Rana, preparations for the dialogue are in the final stage. As part of the preparations, the government is organizing around 10 pre-dialogue events. These include the Himalayan Dialogue in Jumla, and Air Dialogue in Kathmandu.
PM Oli will inaugurate the three-day event, which will be held under the theme “Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity.”
Representatives from China and India, the COP29 president, and the climate representative of Azerbaijan’s president will also address the event.
The event will feature discussions on 12 different topics, including limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius, making mountain economies sustainable, addressing the loss and damage suffered by islands, and gender and inter-generational equality.
Minister Rana said that the main objective of the event is to discuss regional and international cooperation on climate and mountain issues, she said.
