The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday has issued an interim order stopping remuneration of elected representatives of local bodies.
The constitutional bench has issued the order stopping monthly remuneration the elected representatives of local bodies are receiving citing that the Constitution does not have explicit provision of monthly benefits or salary for them despite the Constitution having a provision for benefits, according to the SC.
Elected representatives of local bodies across the country apart from Province 1 have been receiving monthly remuneration formulating laws.
The constitutional bench including Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and four senior justices Deepak Karki, Mira Dhungana, Kedar Chalise, Bishwambhar Shrestha and Hari Krishna Karki hearing the petition filed by advocate Lokendra Bahadur Oli has asked the elected representatives of local bodies from six provinces to not receive monthly remuneration as it is against the Constitution.
The SC has also instructed the six provinces to remove the terms 'monthly benefits' and 'remuneration' from the act they formulated to provide monthly remuneration for elected representatives of local bodies.
The six provinces were providing monthly salary to chief/deputy chief of municipalities/rural municipalities and district coordination committees, and ward chairmen.
