Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota has ruled out any possibility of immediate amendment of the Constitution.
Speaking during the weekly press conference on Thursday to brief about Cabinet decisions, Baskota commented that the Constitution will not be amended merely because someone so wishes. "The people have brought this Constitution after fighting a war," he stated. "The people and not just the government should implement the Constitution as it has been brought by the people. The people cannot become mere spectators."
He repeated Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli's line that any amendment must be justified. "The Constitution is in operation and it will continue to do so if amendment cannot be justified," he quipped.
He opined that there should not be haste for amendment of the Constitution rather than its implementation. "Tens of thousands of dreams are seen every night. They all are not fulfilled."
Speaking at the conclusion of the budget session at the House of Representatives (HoR) earlier on the day, Socialist Party Nepal Chairman Baburam Bhatatrai and Rastriya Janata Party (RJP) leader Rajendra Mahato had stressed that the Constitution must be amended to make it acceptable for everyone.
Mahato claimed that 70 percent of Nepalis will observe a blackout instead of lighting oil lamps on the occasion of Constitution Day on Friday.
