Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma has urged the government to resolve the issue of Chitwan Medical College overcharging the MBBS students.
Students at the college have been agitating for the past two weeks demanding that the college stop overcharging and extra fee already charged by the college be returned.
The Cabinet meeting on October 14, 2018 had set a fee of Rs 3.85 million for MBBS students inside the Kathmandu Valley, and Rs 4.245 million outside the Valley but the college has been charging up to Rs 5.50 million from each student.
Prakash Chand, son of CPN Netra Bikram Chand, has been leading the student movement in Chitwan.
NC Spokesperson Sharma has stated that the student movement should not be connected with violent politics and urged the government to find solution to the problem. "Do not connect the wires of peaceful movement with violent rebellion. Do find solution immediately," Sharma has tweeted.
He pointed that the students have started peaceful agitation after the college management put pressure for extra payment and called the parents complaining about their children. "Will the students go for pilgrimage instead of starting a movement in such situation, dear prime minister?" he has asked.
The Education Ministry on March 26 had instructed private medical colleges to return the extra money if they have overcharged after agreement reached in the meeting of agitating students of and representatives of the association of private medical colleges including chairman Basuruddin Ansari and promoter of Chitwan Medical College Haris Chandra Neupane called by Education Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel.
But Chitwan Medical College has yet to return the extra money and is still putting pressure on students to pay above the fee set by the government. Promoter Neupane is openly defying the government instruction claiming the college has yet to receive instruction even as the government is turning a blind eye to the student movement demanding that the government's decision be honored.
