Four people were injured in a clash between protesting Gen Z youths and security personnel in Simara of Bara on Thursday.
The injured are Nishant Shrestha, Sandesh Ghimire, Sumit Chaudhary, and Nilhari Sapkota.
Of the four injured, two have been referred to Birgunj for further treatment, while the other two are being treated at Simara Hospital, police said.
A curfew is currently in force in Simara.
The District Administration Office of Bara has issued a curfew order from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
The curfew covers 500 meters on both sides of the highway from south of Pathlaiya Chowk to Jitpur Lalkapul on the Birgunj-Pathlaiya road section and a 500-meter radius around Simara Airport.
The order issued by Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra under Section 6 (a) and (b) of the Local Administration Act 1971 prohibits movement, gatherings, processions, demonstrations, meetings, or encirclement in these areas.
Gen Z youths continued their protests on Thursday, demanding action against cadres of the CPN-UML’s youth wing, National Youth Federation Nepal, who allegedly assaulted Gen Z leaders.
After Gen Z youths held demonstrations at Simara Chowk, traffic on the Birgunj-Pathlaiya section of the Tribhuvan Highway has been disrupted.
Shops and businesses in Simara Bazaar remain closed.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Bijay Raj Pandit, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Bara, said that although the clash has stopped, the youths are still continuing their protest.
According to him, a few tear-gas shells were fired as needed to bring the situation under control.
Due to the ongoing protest on the highway, all vehicular movement has come to a halt.
Cargo vehicles leaving Birgunj Customs, the country’s main customs point, as well as vehicles traveling to and from Birgunj to various parts of the country, are stranded on the road.
