Arrests continue of those involved in destructive activities during the Gen Z movement on September 9.
Individuals involved in the arson, vandalism, and looting that occurred on that day are being arrested almost daily.
Deputy Inspector General Abhi Narayan Kafle, the central spokesperson for Nepal Police, said that 380 individuals have been arrested so far while 151 cases have been registered in connection with the incidents of that day.
These figures are from across the country, including the Kathmandu Valley.
The highest number of arrests is also in Kathmandu.
According to DIG Kafle, in Kathmandu alone, 77 cases have been registered and 177 individuals have been arrested.
Similarly, in Lalitpur, 13 cases have been registered and 26 people have been arrested.
In Bhaktapur, 6 cases have been registered and the police have made 23 arrests.
Thus, in the Valley, 96 cases have been registered, and 226 individuals have been arrested.
Some of the arrested individuals are in custody for further investigation, while some have been released on bail.
Most individuals have been charged with criminal mischief.
Cases have been registered for offenses including attempt to murder, theft, and possession of arms and ammunition.
After 17 people were shot dead in New Baneshwar on September 8, enraged protestors vandalized and set fire to the Parliament building, Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, and numerous government institutions, commercial buildings, and police offices the next day.
Looting, vandalism, and arson also occurred at the private homes of some major political leaders, party offices, Bhatbhateni Superstore, Hilton Hotel, Hyatt Hotel, among others. Three police personnel were also murdered.
Police arrested all those involved in these incidents based on CCTV footage and videos and moved the investigation forward.
12 arrested over murder of police personnel
On September 9, three police personnel were murdered: two from the Maharajgunj Police Circle and one from the Koteshwar Police Division.
The District Police Range, Kathmandu, has said that 12 people have been arrested so far on charges of murdering Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Milan Rai and Police Constable Uttam Thapa from Maharajgunj, and Police Assistant Head Constable Amrit Gurung from Koteshwar.
According to the District Police Range, initially, Yuvaraj Kyapchhaki from Kavre and Buddhilal Tamang, also known as “Sonam,” were arrested for the murder of ASI Rai from Maharajgunj. Subsequently, Hom Prasad Paudel and Tikaram Bishwakarma were arrested for the murder of Constable Thapa from Maharajgunj. Anupam Bhandari was arrested on charges of involvement in the murder of Assistant Head Constable Gurung from Koteshwar.
Later, during the Tihar festival, police arrested five more individuals. Those arrested include 21-year-old Som Bahadur Gurung from Gorkha, 21-year-old Rajiv Gurung from Tanahun, 21-year-old Unique Shrestha from Tanahun, a 17-year-old from Sarlahi, and a 16-year-old from Ramechhap. They have all been sent to jail for further investigation.
On Monday, the Maharajgunj Police Circle arrested two more individuals – 22-year-old Alish Shrestha from Golanjor, Sindhuli, and 27-year-old Saurabh Tamang from Rasuwa. They were arrested from Sukedhara based on CCTV footage. They are accused of assaulting Police Constable Thapa from Maharajgunj, as well as vandalizing, pelting stones, and setting fire to the police office.
