Four-wheelers are banned from plying on the core areas of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City from Tuesday.
The four-wheelers are banned in and around Ason, Indrachowk, Makkhan, Tyauda, Thahiti, Bhedasingh, Nardevi and Kilagal that lie in ward numbers 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 27 of Kathmandu. Vehicles are banned in those areas from 7 am to 7 pm.
One-way movement of four-wheelers will, however, be allowed from Naradevi to Bhedasingh. One-way traffic will also be allowed from Tengal to Bangemudha, Chhetrapati to Basantapur, and Chettrapati to Bangemudha through Thahiti.
Chairmen of 11 wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and local representatives jointly took such decision as the tourists coming to visit religious, historical and archaeological heritage and pedestrians have suffered heavily due to movement of four-wheelers in the inner areas of the city.
"After being declared four-wheeler-free zone, these areas are peaceful and wide. We started this rule ourselves by coming here today morning," Chairman of ward number 17 Nabin Manandhar said.
Meanwhile, parking area has not yet been fixed in these areas. "The parking system will not be managed today itself. We are gradually searching for the alternatives," Manandhar added.
