China’s Ministry of Water Resources has said that a significant barrier lake has formed due to an avalanche that struck the Lhende River, the Global Times reported.
According to the report, the lake in the upper reaches of the river had accumulated an estimated 2 million cubic meters of water as of Thursday morning, and the lake had already started overflowing.
The report also said that another 3 million cubic meters of water is expected to flow into the lake over the next three days, posing a high risk of a breach.
Citing China’s Ministry of Water Resources, the Global Times reported that the lake has formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers in Nepal.
The ministry is closely monitoring the lake's developments and conducting flood simulations and analyses to prepare for a potential breach and provide support for emergency rescue efforts, according to the report.
As of Thursday morning, three people had reportedly been confirmed dead, two rescued, and 558 remained missing, including 260 foreign nationals, on the Chinese side following the disaster.
