CPN-UML lawmaker Kiran Thapa Magar has been appointed chief minister of Bagmati province.
Thapa Magar had staked his claim to the chief minister’s post on Wednesday with the support of the CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party (NCP), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP). Province Chief Deepak Devkota appointed him chief minister on Thursday.
The parties have also reached an agreement on the allocation of ministries in the Bagmati government.
Under the agreement, the UML will get three ministries, including the chief minister’s portfolio, RPP will get three, and NCP will get two ministries.
There is, however, a dispute within the RPP after its parliamentary party leader in Bagmati, Uddhav Thapa, supported the formation of the new Bagmati government.
Earlier on Thursday, the RPP’s central executive committee decided to recommend removing Thapa as parliamentary party leader and from the party’s general membership.
Previously, Bagmati had a Nepali Congress-led government supported by the UML, with Indra Bahadur Baniya serving as chief minister.
