Chief Minister of Bagmati province Indra Bahadur Baniya has resigned from his post.
Addressing the provincial assembly meeting on Monday, Baniya announced that he was stepping down to pave the way for the formation of a new government.
Baniya announced his resignation from the rostrum of the provincial assembly and said that he would immediately meet the province chief and submit his resignation letter.
The coalition partner CPN-UML withdrew its support to the government on July 22. In the meantime, Chief Minister Baniya attempted to secure a majority to remain in office.
He has urged the UML and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) to form a new government by securing a majority. The two parties need the support of two additional lawmakers to form a government in the province.
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), which has 12 lawmakers, has already decided to remain neutral.
A total of 53 lawmakers are required for a majority to form a government in Bagmati. Although Baniya had said that he would seek a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly on Monday, he resigned after it became clear that he was unlikely to secure the required majority.
Baniya is the parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress.
