Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak has warned that the party will split if the process for its 15th general convention is not halted immediately.
Speaking to party workers during a meeting in the Dodhara-Chandani area of Kanchanpur on Sunday, Lekhak said that they were still making every possible effort and showing maximum flexibility to preserve party unity.
He said that the dispute should be resolved by bringing together the party committees formed through the special general convention and the 14th general convention.
Lekhak said that removing party President Gagan Thapa was not among their demands.
“The leaders who were part of the 14th general convention but were not included in the special general convention should be included in the central committee,” he said.
Lekhak said that although President Thapa could appoint the coordinators of the election committee, active membership inquiry committee, and disciplinary committee and retain a majority in those bodies, their proposal was that each should also include one representative from the other groups.
“We have tried to resolve the party’s differences while recognizing Gaganji as the party president, but we have not been able to reach an agreement,” he said.
He added that they had been making continuous efforts to unite the party for around 11 months, and that there was still a possibility of reaching a settlement.
“There is still a way out. Let us halt the general convention from our respective sides. If the general convention is not stopped, the party will split,” he said.
