Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that ward-level conventions cannot currently be held in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading, the districts affected by the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli flood on August 26.
Speaking at a meeting of the party’s central committee held at Sanepa on Sunday, Thapa said that the Nepali Congress’s 15th general convention would begin on October 2 as scheduled. However, he indicated that the schedule for lower-level conventions could be revised.
The Nepali Congress had previously announced a schedule setting September 9 as the date for ward-level conventions.
“We have a statutory obligation. The Congress’s central general convention will begin in Kathmandu on October 2, and we do not have the luxury to change that date,” Thapa said. “Given the current disaster situation, there are difficulties in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. I do not see a situation where regular ward conventions can be held in these three districts. Even when I was traveling to the affected areas, I did not see such a possibility.”
He said that people from districts including Ramechhap and Gorkha had also traveled toward the Bhotekoshi area in search of their families and relatives.
Thapa said that the central committee would discuss when ward conventions should begin and subsequently finalize a revised schedule for conventions at the lower levels of the party.
