The government is preparing to provide a monthly rental allowance of Rs 15,000 to genuine landless squatters until they receive land ownership certificates.
Government representatives shared this information on Thursday during a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives, News Agency Nepal reported.
According to committee chair Hari Dhakal, ministers and officials from the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration presented updates on the progress of landless squatter management and informed the committee about the proposed support plan.
The government is currently conducting a screening process to identify landless people staying in various holding centers in Kathmandu. Once the process is completed, the government aims to distribute land ownership certificates through a “fast-track” system.
The Ministry of Urban Development informed the committee that the necessary financial resources for the purpose have already been secured.
The government also claimed that arrangements have been made for school bus services for children of squatter families living in the holding centers, along with proper nutritional support for new mothers.
Committee chair Dhakal said: “In the context of Kathmandu, screening of landless people staying in holding centers is ongoing. The government is preparing to provide Rs 15,000 monthly house rent support until they receive land ownership certificates, and we have been informed that the necessary resources have already been secured for that.”
According to sources, the amount of assistance will vary depending on family size.
“Small families will receive Rs 15,000, while larger families may receive more accordingly. However, the exact amount has not yet been decided,” the source said.
The parliamentary committee has also decided to conduct on-site monitoring to assess the actual status of the government’s progress and implementation efforts.
