Opposition parties, including the main opposition, have urged President Ram Chandra Paudel not to issue the ordinances recommended by the government.
The government has recommended five ordinances, including one related to the Constitutional Council, to the president for issuance.
A meeting of opposition parties, hosted by Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe at the parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar, on Wednesday decided to formally request the president not to issue the ordinances submitted by the government.
The meeting was attended by Nepali Congress chief whip Basana Thapa, CPN-UML parliamentary party leader Ram Bahadur Thapa, Nepali Communist Party chief whip Yuvaraj Dulal, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party lawmaker Saraswati Lama.
Announcing the decisions of the meeting, Angdembe said, “Since the ordinances forwarded to the president have been recommended with the intent of bypassing Parliament, we sincerely request the president not to approve them.”
The opposition parties have also demanded that the postponed sessions of both houses of the Federal Parliament be convened immediately.
According to Angdembe, the Government of Nepal was found to have recommended ordinances related to the Constitutional Council and cooperatives on April 27, and an ordinance related to health science academies, an ordinance to amend some Nepal laws, and an ordinance related to universities on April 28 to the president for issuance.
"Introducing ordinances in this manner by suspending a Parliament session after it has already been summoned is a grossly unparliamentary and undemocratic move. Therefore, we strongly oppose, condemn, and denounce it," he said while reading the decision. "We demand that the government withdraw these ordinances immediately."
The Rastriya Shram Sanskriti Party did not participate in Wednesday’s meeting. When asked about this, Angdembe said, “They informed us that the deputy speaker is unwell and that all lawmakers are at the hospital. They will probably attend the next meeting.”
