The government has decided to recommend advocate Narayan Kandel for appointment as attorney general.
According to the prime minister’s press advisor, Deepa Dahal, a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday made the decision to recommend Kandel for the post.
Kandel himself confirmed that he has been informed of the government’s recommendation.
As per constitutional provisions, the attorney general is appointed by the president upon the government’s recommendation.
Kandel began his career in journalism in Baglung during the 1990s, working for Radio Nepal. He also played a role in establishing the Federation of Nepali Journalists in Baglung.
Since the early 2000s, he has been engaged in the legal profession. He completed his undergraduate studies at Nepal Law Campus and earned a master’s degree in peacekeeping operations from the National University of Ireland.
He has also worked extensively in the human rights sector and holds a PhD in law from Queen's University Belfast.
Most recently, Kandel served as a lawyer for Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane.
