Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has resigned from his position.
Thapa submitted his resignation to Vice-president Bishwa Prakash Sharma on Wednesday.
“The president has submitted the resignation letter to the vice-president. A central committee meeting has been called for tomorrow, and the resignation will be discussed there,” an NC office-bearer told Setopati.
The resignation letter submitted by Thapa has not yet been made public.
The central committee meeting on Friday will discuss and decide whether to accept the resignation.
The party has called the central committee meeting for Friday at 1 p.m. to review the election results.
President Thapa resigned, taking responsibility for the electoral defeat.
In the House of Representatives election held on March 5, Thapa was defeated in Sarlahi-4. Along with him, all other party office-bearers who contested the election also suffered defeats.
The party had participated in the election shortly after holding a special general convention.
The faction led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba did not participate in the special general convention. The Deuba faction has filed a case in the Supreme Court regarding the convention, and the case is currently under consideration.
Following the defeat of most candidates in the election, Thapa had been facing criticism and calls for his resignation.
Thapa had also indicated during a meeting with Vice-president Sharma that he would resign.
