The District Election Office in Kathmandu has expressed serious concern over certain online media outlets and social media users violating voter privacy by conducting polls asking the public whom they intend to vote for.
Issuing a stern reminder to adhere to the Election Code of Conduct, the office has requested all parties to refrain from activities that compromise the confidentiality of the electorate. It noted that such actions constitute a violation of Section 4 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2026, and warned that if these activities do not cease immediately, legal proceedings will be initiated in accordance with prevailing laws.
The office clarified that election campaigning is strictly permitted only starting 17 days before polling day, following the publication of the final list of candidates. This permitted window includes organizing rallies, mass meetings, or corner meets, publishing or broadcasting promotional materials in the media, and conducting door-to-door visits. Despite repeated discussions, interactions, and public notices regarding these regulations, the Election Office noted that some political parties, their representatives, and candidates have been flouting these rules.
Reports have surfaced regarding organization of corner meetings, dissemination of campaign materials, and conduct of door-to-door programs to influence voters ahead of the designated timeline.
Consequently, the Election Office has urged all stakeholders to stop such premature activities. It further warned that if evidence is found of anyone campaigning through any medium in violation of the code, immediate legal action will be taken.
Code of conduct monitoring officers Mukti Ram Rijal, Shiva Ram Bhattarai, Romakant Kafle, Mun Kumar KC, Sunita Subedi, and Rukmagat Aryal jointly issued this notice to draw attention to all aspects of the election regulations.
