The National Assembly elections concluded Sunday. According to the Election Commission, the voter turnout was 95.68 percent.
Voters from Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) abstained from voting. According to RPP Spokesperson Mohan Shrestha, the party's entire focus is centered on the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. They, therefore, did not participate in the National Assembly election. Some members of parliament and local level representatives from other parties also did not participate in the voting.
Nonetheless, candidates from Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party have emerged victorious. NC had reached an agreement to coordinate with UML and LSP for the National Assembly election while Sher Bahadur Deuba was NC president and Purna Bahadur Khadka acting president.
According to that arrangement, out of the 18 seats up for election, NC fielded candidates for nine, UML eight, and LSP one.
Of the 19 vacant seats in the National Assembly, there is a provision for one member to be appointed by the president upon the recommendation of the government.
The election was held Sunday for the remaining 18 seats. Voting took place from nine in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. The results were announced immediately following the vote count.
