The writ petition filed at the Supreme Court (SC) in the name of the outgoing Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba contains three primary demands.
Outgoing Acting NC President Purna Bahadur Khadka and other leaders arrived at the SC Sunday morning to file the petition. Although NC leaders requested a hearing on Sunday itself, the SC administration stated that it was not possible under the law. The hearing for the petition has been scheduled for Tuesday.
The Deuba faction’s first demand is to dissolve the current central committee claiming that the Special General Convention was illegitimate. Furthermore, the date for filing nominations for the election scheduled for March 5 has been set for January 20. They have, therefore, requested nomination for candidates be stopped. If the nominations have already been filed, the NC leaders have requested the SC to suspend them and announce a new date for nominations.
The Election Commission on Friday had granted official recognition to NC President Gagan Thapa and his central committee. The petitioners have also demanded that this decision be annulled. Outgoing NC President Deuba is named as the petitioner in the case. The petition names the Election Commission, NC President Gagan Thapa, and Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma as defendants, along with the central committee elected by the special general convention as defendants.
