Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the party's priority is the election, not the restoration of Parliament.
Deuba made this remark during a meeting with government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel on Friday. He added that the NC has already begun preparations for the election.
On Friday, Minister Kharel held separate meetings with NC President Deuba, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, and Nepali Communist Party Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
According to Minister Kharel, Deuba clearly stated during their conversation that the party’s priority is the election rather than the restoration of the House of Representatives.
“He urged the government to create a conducive environment for elections. He stressed the need to ensure a secure atmosphere,” Minister Kharel said. “He also said that the Nepali Congress will extend full cooperation to conduct the election.”
Deuba’s remarks come at a time when there is confusion over the NC’s official stance regarding the election, especially after several outgoing lawmakers from the party moved the Supreme Court seeking House restoration.
A supplementary petition was recently filed at the court along with signatures of 65 out of 87 outgoing NC lawmakers in favor of restoring the House.
Previously, on December 9, a petition was filed at the Supreme Court by eight outgoing NC lawmakers, including chief whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire and whip Sushila Thing.
The court has issued a show-cause order in the petition.
