Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has begun informing party workers that he will contest the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026, from Dadeldhura.
During a conversation with Bhuwan Bhatta, a youth leader and central member of the Nepal Students’ Union from his home district Dadeldhura, at his residence in Maharajgunj on Tuesday, Deuba said that he intends to run as a candidate for the House of Representatives from Dadeldhura under the first-past-the-post electoral system in the upcoming election.
"I spoke with the president today. He said that he is in favor of contesting the House of Representatives election from Dadeldhura for the last time," Bhatta told Setopati.
During the meeting, Bhatta said that the party now needs to promote the youth. "Whether to contest the election or not, you take that decision yourself," Bhatta reportedly told Deuba.
Some had speculated that Deuba would not contest the upcoming election. However, in meetings with youth from his home district, Deuba expressed his desire to run from Dadeldhura for the final time and sought their support.
Deuba was elected from Dadeldhura in the elections of 1991, 1994, 1999, 2008, 2013, 2017, and 2022.
Recently, regional committees of the NC across the country are holding meetings to recommend names of individuals aspiring to become candidates for the House of Representatives and the National Assembly. Preparations are also underway to recommend Deuba's name as a candidate from Dadeldhura.
Additionally, Deuba said that the 15th general convention will be held from January 10 to 12 as per the schedule set by the central committee.
"He said that the general convention will be held on the scheduled dates and that he is positive about ensuring meaningful representation of youth in the party and in the general election," Bhatta added.
