The central committee meeting of the Nepali Congress (NC) has been postponed again.
The meeting, which was called for Thursday at 2 p.m., has been deferred until Friday at 2 p.m.
Issuing a statement, NC Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel said that the central committee meeting has been postponed until Friday.
Although the NC began its central committee meeting on October 14, it has not been able to reach a decision yet due to disagreements over the general convention schedule.
Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka held an informal discussion with General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma on Wednesday. According to leaders, the central committee meeting was postponed again because they could not reach a consensus on the date for the general convention during that discussion.
General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma have maintained that if a regular general convention is not held within Paush (mid-December to mid-January), there would be no option but to hold a special general convention.
On the other hand, some current and former office-bearers close to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba have insisted that the general convention should only be held in Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May) after the elections.
In such a situation, Acting President Khadka has been saying that decisions will be taken by the central committee through consensus. Although President Deuba also held informal discussions with leaders regarding the general convention schedule, the issue remains unresolved.
The NC is divided over whether a regular or special general convention should be held before the elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. Many leaders are opposing a special general convention, maintaining that a regular general convention should be held in Baisakh.
Meanwhile, 54 percent of the general convention delegates have demanded a special general convention. Leader Guru Raj Ghimire criticized the NC central committee, saying it has set a record by continuing its meeting for a month and a half but failed to reach a decision on the general convention.
Those in favor of a special general convention are also demanding that a date and venue be fixed for it.
Leaders close to President Deuba, however, have been holding meetings and gatherings, insisting that a regular general convention should be held.
