The Election Commission has held a discussion with political parties regarding the election of National Assembly members scheduled for January 25, 2026.
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, commissioners, and representatives from national parties represented in the National Assembly, including the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), and others took part in the discussion held at the Election Commission's office on Kantipath on Thursday.
Commission Secretary Mahadev Pantha said that the election program will be introduced after consultations with the parties on the technical preparations for the National Assembly election.
This election is being held in accordance with the legal provision requiring election to be held 35 days before the term of National Assembly members end.
The term of 19 members of the National Assembly ends on March 5. Election will be held for 18 of these seats, while one member will be nominated by the president.
The electoral college for the National Assembly will consist of provincial assembly members, chairpersons/mayors, and vice-chairpersons/deputy mayors of local bodies within the province.
Each provincial assembly member’s vote carries a weight of 48, while each mayor/chairperson or deputy mayor/vice-chairperson’s vote carries a weight of 18.
