A meeting was held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Home Affairs between the government and Durga Prasai’s group.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Home Secretary Rameshwar Dangal, Home Ministry spokesperson Ananda Kafle, and the chief district officers (CDOs) of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur took part in the meeting.
Prasai’s group was represented by Tijendra Prasad Rayamajhi, head of the organization department; Madhav Prasad Khatiwada, spokesperson for the campaign; and Devi Prasad Sangraula, among other members.
According to the home minister’s secretariat, the government informed Prasai’s group that their statements, activities, and demands were unconstitutional and divisive in nature, and therefore could not be fulfilled.
“Your remarks are anarchic, and your activities appear to be disruptive to society. Such demands, which are not in accordance with the Constitution, cannot be met,” the home minister’s secretariat said.
Prasai’s group, however, expressed happiness that the government had formally invited them for talks for the first time in three years since the start of their movement, and also thanked the government.
Participants in the meeting said that Prasai could not attend because he was unwell.
The group also informed the government that they had put forward a 27-point list of demands, and that they were willing to correct their statements if even one of their demands was addressed.
