The Supreme Court administration has refused to register 10 writ petitions brought against the government's decision to ban unregistered social media.
Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala said that it was decided to reject all 10 petitions.
"Ten petitions had been submitted, and all have been rejected," he said.
Registrar Man Bahadur Karki made the decision to reject the petitions.
On Thursday, the government decided to ban social media platforms that had not been registered in Nepal.
Petitions can also be filed in the Supreme Court against the court's decision to reject petitions.
The apex court had issued a mandamus directing the government to regulate social media by enacting laws.
"An extended full bench of this court, on September 29, 2024, had issued an order in the name of the government of Nepal to 'mandatorily register social media platforms with the authorized body before operation, evaluate and monitor undesirable content, and make digital media and social media responsible and accountable.' Therefore, the petitions submitted under the extraordinary jurisdiction of this court seeking annulment of the letter issued by the ministry on September 4 to deactivate social media platforms not listed as per the aforementioned directive cannot be registered," the court administration said in its decision.
The government decided on Thursday to ban social media platforms not registered in Nepal, citing the court’s order and the Cabinet’s decision.
