Eight student organizations have approached the Supreme Court against the government's decision to abolish Free Student Union (FSU) structures from universities.
Organizations including the All Nepal National Free Students Union affiliated with the CPN-UML and the All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary affiliated with the Nepali Communist Party filed a writ petition on Friday against the scrapping of FSUs through an ordinance.
The Supreme Court has already registered the petition, and a hearing has been scheduled for May 11.
In the petition, the student groups argue that the move violates constitutionally guaranteed freedom of organization, freedom of expression, and democratic rights.
They have named the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, among others, as defendants in the case.
