Indra Bahadur Baniya, the leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party, has been appointed as the chief minister of Bagmati province.
NC lawmaker Baniya was the only one to stake a claim for the chief minister's post. He was supported by the CPN-UML.
Baniya was appointed chief minister by Province Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Devendra Sapkota, spokesperson for the Office of the Province Chief, Baniya was appointed chief minister according to Article 168 (2) of the Constitution.
Previously, Bahadur Singh Lama Tamang of the NC was the chief minister. After Tamang lost his position as the leader of the NC parliamentary party, Baniya became the parliamentary party leader and was subsequently appointed chief minister.
In the 110-member Bagmati provincial assembly, the NC has 37 lawmakers, and the UML has 27 lawmakers.
