Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Gagan Thapa has said Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli should show details of the expenses incurred for control of COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking during the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting on Tuesday, Thapa has claimed that the government has failed in control of the pandemic pointing that the death toll and number of infection are rising in lack of effective work from the government despite sufficient time on hand.
"Where has Rs 10 billion been spent?" Thapa sought answers from the government. "We will not allow the government to sleep."
He accused the government of indulging in corruption even during the national disaster. He pointed at deaths due to hunger and suicide, new mothers who have died in lack of hospital case, those who have died in quarantine facilities and the person who has self-immolated and asked who will take responsibility for their deaths.
"Many have advised the government but it did not listen to us or the court or the press. Why is this situation of coronavirus even under restrictions? Who is to blame? Is it lack of money, or did the court or NC obstruct?" he fumed. "It has been stopped by the arrogance of the PM who feels he is omniscient. It has been obstructed by the indolence of the government. Stopped by incompetence."
He claimed that this government cannot win the battle against the pandemic. "We will no longer stay saying we will help. We now need answers. Where has Rs 10 billion been spent? We need all the details."
He compared the ill-managed quarantine facilities prepared by the government with concentration camps where peopleare left to die and also took exception to narrowing of the scope for testing in recent times. "We may as well stop testing and declare the country corona free," he suggested sarcastically.
He said the sufferings of people will not be alleviated with the PM's poems and songs.
He demanded that the deputy PM should answer all these questions and the PM himself should answer them in the House if the answers by DPM are unsatisfactory.
