Former king Gyanendra Shah has been provided vehicle pass to come to Kathmandu from Jhapa following widespread condemnation of the government decision to deny one.
The Home Ministry issued a pass allowing the former royal couple to travel to Kathmandu Thursday night. "We issued the pass yesterday night itself," Chief District Officer (CDO) of Jhapa Uday Bahadur Rana Magar told Setopati. "They have already left at eight Friday morning."
The Jhapa District Administration Office had twice recommended a pass for Shah earlier on Thursday as well but the ministry refused to oblige pointing that he did not meet either of the two-point criteria of coming for treatment on recommendation of a doctor or funeral rites.
The government decision to deny the pass to the former monarch was widely condemned on the social media.
