CPN lawmaker Niru Devi Pal has challenged the men who have opposed demolition of chhaupadis (shed for menstruating women) to stay in one for a day.
She presented a report in the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting on Tuesday informing that a total of 8,700 chhaupadis have been demolished in 12 districts. "Those minting dollars tried to generate income by showing those sheds," Pal stated. "It is understandable for them to have a headache but I've not been able to understand why others are also having a headache."
She pointed how some are opposing demolition of chhaupadis in Far West and Karnali provinces. "I want to urge my brothers to stay in a chhaupadi for a day if they are having headache at demolition of chhaupadis," she challenged. "Why is this issue being raised when those in Far West and Karnali are raising their heads?"
CPN lawmaker Gajendra Bahadur Mahat during the HoR meeting on January 31 had claimed houses are being demolished in the name of chhaupadi. He had commented that the Home Ministry did not have any work to do.
"Our Home Ministry is like that now. Our houses have been demolished in the name of chhaupadi. Can one demolish houses just because a person has died?" he had fumed. "Eight persons have died in a hotel. Should we go around demolishing hotels?"
