The government has beefed up security system for the fourth summit of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) being held in Kathmandu.
The government is preparing to mobilize all four security bodies for security of the government heads and representatives arriving to take part in the summit being held on August 30 and 31.
As many as 18,000 security personnel including 5,000 Nepal Army, 9,647 Nepal Police, 2,500 Armed Police Force and 500 office-bearers of National Investigation Department will be mobilized for the security of guests.
Spokesperson at the Home Ministry Ram Krishna Subedi said security arrangements will be made agile and alert by mobilizing the security personnel.
"A security and transport committee has been formed under Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa. Adequate number of security personnel will be deployed as per the preparations of the committee," Subedi told Setopati.
The Home Ministry has also intensified discussion on traffic management for two days.
"Discussions are underway to announce school holidays on those days. We are also discussing whether to alternately allow odd and even numbered vehicles for those two days," he said, "Where the guests participating in the summit will stay has yet to be decided. Discussions are underway on the same issue."
The government heads of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bhutan including Nepal are taking part in the summit.
President of Myanmar Win Myint, President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena, Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, PM of Thailand Prayath Chan-ocha, PM of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bhutan Dasho Tshering Wangchuk are arriving to take part in the summit.
