Five individuals, including Police Inspector Binu Kumari Shahi, have been acquitted in a case involving honey trapping and extortion.
On Tuesday, a bench of Judge Dhakaram Paudel at the Lalitpur District Court convicted one individual in the case while acquitting five others.
The District Police Range, Lalitpur, had filed a case against six individuals on November 24, 2024, on charges of criminal gain (extortion).
The charges were filed against Inspector Shahi, Sushma Bishwakarma, Tajammul Islam (also known as Tajmul), Bhima Devi Thapa, Mahendra Hamal, and Darshan Pokharel. Shahi and Pokharel had appeared in court at a later date.
Among them, the court found Tajammul Islam guilty. According to court sources, he has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison and fined 30,000 rupees.
The six were accused of extorting 3 million rupees from Indra Kumar Rai, a resident of Sanagaun, Lalitpur, originally from Sankhuwasabha.
They allegedly threatened to file a rape case against Rai and initially demanded 6 million rupees. It was further alleged that they took Rai to the Bungamati Police Circle and demanded the money in the presence of Inspector Shahi. However, Inspector Shahi and the others have now been acquitted of these charges.
