The red panda at the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, that had been the target of repeated theft attempts, has died.
The zoo's chief, Satya Narayan Shah, said that the red panda died on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
According to him, the red panda had been ill for a week and eating less food. It died during treatment.
"We were giving it medicine after it fell ill. There was no improvement and it died," he said. "The postmortem report showed that it died due to kidney failure."
Shah said that despite being cared for by veterinarians from the zoo and the forest office, the red panda could not be saved.
According to Shah, the red panda lived for 11 years, while their average lifespan is typically 8 to 10 years. Its mate died last year. Shah noted that being alone might have contributed to its inability to survive longer.
According to Shah, an attempt was made to steal the red panda around 10 p.m. on May 13. The thieves had made a second attempt the same day after the first one failed.
