The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has drawn the attention of the government toward ensuring human rights of people affected by the cold wave.
The NHRC has said its attention was drawn toward the news reports about the death of people in some parts of the country in tarai and high lands due to cold.
Biting cold wave and snowfall have so far claimed the lives of over two dozen people in Humla, Jajarkot, Saptari, Siraha, Rautahat and Kapilvastu and this is the finding of the NHRC monitoring.
Earthquake survivors and those displaced by floods living in the tent, Musahar community, people with low income, children, aged citizens, new mothers and people with various health problems are at high risk of being caught up by cold, the NHRC said.
The number of patients suffering common cold, fever, pneumonia, asthma and cold diarrhea in health facilities has soared with the sliding temperatures. Patients have been deprived of timely care and required medicines due to lack of sufficient human resources and medicine stock.
