The Delhi Police personnel issued more than 1,700 tickets for drunken driving Sunday night to New Year revelers in the capital city, most of which were issued to women.
The Delhi Police had made stringent arrangements to check drunken driving on Delhi roads. As many as 433 checking points were set up across the capital city and nearly 125 alcohmeters were used to test the drunken drivers, said Delhi Police sources, adding that the drunken drivers were returning from New Year bashes.
Confirming the fines imposed on drunken drivers, Dipender Pathak, a senior Delhi Police cop, said the checking of drivers continued through the night. "Traffic rules are not gender specific. We issued 745 tickets before midnight, and 1,007 after midnight," he said when asked if women were punished more than men.
Around 90 percent of those issued tickets for drunken driving were youths, mostly women, said Delhi Police sources.
Considering the increasing number of road accidents in India due to drunken driving, the government has enacted strict traffic laws, including jail terms and heavy monetary fines.
