Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected president of the Nepali Congress.
Thapa won the presidency with 6,584 votes in the election held under the party’s 15th general convention.
The other candidate for the president’s post, Shyam Krishna Khadgi, received 375 votes. Thapa secured 6,209 more votes than Khadgi.
A total of 7,013 votes were cast in the election, of which 54 were declared invalid.
Based on the total votes cast, Thapa secured 93.88 percent of the vote. Khadgi received 5.35 percent, while 0.77 percent of the ballots were invalid.
Thapa had previously been elected general secretary at the Nepali Congress’s 14th general convention. He had been actively campaigning for leadership change and organizational reforms within the party.
A special general convention, organized through the initiative of then-general secretary Thapa and other leaders, elected him as party president in January.
The change in leadership following the special general convention sparked debate within the Nepali Congress over the party’s legitimacy, organizational structure, and leadership. Thapa subsequently won the presidency in the 15th general convention.
