The voting period for electing new leadership at the 15th general convention of the Nepali Congress has been extended by two hours.
Voting was originally scheduled to continue until 3 p.m. Friday. However, delays caused by the time required for each voter to cast their ballot – at least half an hour per person – prompted officials to extend the deadline until 5 p.m.
In a notice, the party’s central election committee announced that voting, initially scheduled to end at 3 p.m., would now continue until 5 p.m.
Voting began at 7 a.m., with general convention representatives participating in the election. The deadline was extended after long queues formed at the polling stations.
A total of 7,317 general convention representatives are voting to elect the Nepali Congress's new leadership.
The process is taking time because the representatives must vote across 23 categories for positions including party president, vice-presidents, general secretaries, joint general secretaries, and central members.
Raju Katuwal, member-secretary of the election committee, issued the notice announcing the extension of voting hours.
