The Government of India is set to appoint Sudhakar Dalela as the new ambassador to Nepal.
According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indian government is preparing to appoint Dalela as ambassador.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Dalela is an officer of the 1993 batch of the Indian Foreign Service.
Dalela previously served as the Indian ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025. He has also shouldered important responsibilities handling relations with Nepal and Bhutan at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
Dalela served as Director (North) at the Ministry of External Affairs from 2006 to 2007 and as Joint Secretary (North) from 2016 to 2019. In these roles, he looked after India's relations with Nepal and Bhutan.
He worked as a director at the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi from 2009 to 2011, where he handled matters related to India's relations with South Asian neighbors, East Asia and the Indo-Pacific, the Gulf, the Middle East, and African countries.
With experience in trade and economic diplomacy, Dalela worked as Director (Trade Policy) at the Ministry of Commerce. He served twice at India's Permanent Mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and was India's deputy permanent representative from 2014 to 2016.
He also held various diplomatic assignments in the United States. He was the Consul General of India in Chicago and served at the Embassy of India in Washington, DC, as minister for political affairs from 2011 to 2014 and as deputy chief of mission from 2020 to 2022.
Dalela has been serving as secretary (economic relations) at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs since September 1, 2025. In this role, he has been overseeing India's economic diplomacy, development partnerships with the Global South, partnerships with Africa, multilateral economic relations, and matters concerning new and emerging strategic technologies. He is also India's Sherpa for BRICS, IBSA, and I2U2.
An electronics engineering graduate, Dalela is set to become India's new ambassador to Nepal. The previous ambassador, Naveen Srivastava, has already returned after completing his tenure.
