The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has decided to take disciplinary action against Uddhav Thapa, the party’s parliamentary party leader and provincial assembly member in Bagmati province.
The party’s central executive committee made the decision at a meeting on Thursday after Thapa supported CPN-UML lawmaker Kiran Thapa Magar for the post of chief minister in Bagmati, contrary to the party’s central decision and directives.
The RPP had sought an explanation from Thapa on Wednesday, but he did not submit it.
Party Chairman Rajendra Lingden said that the party had decided to recommend removing Thapa both as an RPP general member and as a member of the provincial assembly.
“We have decided to recommend that Uddhav Thapa be removed from the party’s general membership as well as from the position of provincial assembly member,” Lingden said.
According to Lingden, the central executive committee had decided on August 5 not to join provincial governments. He said that the party had subsequently summoned all 12 of its Bagmati provincial lawmakers to the central office on August 6, discussed the matter with them and informed them of the decision.
He said that the party had also sent a letter on August 17 instructing its lawmakers not to participate in either supporting or opposing the provincial government.
“But suddenly, a letter was sent yesterday saying that [we] would support the UML. This is a violation of party discipline,” Lingden said.
Thapa was elected from Kathmandu-8 (b) in the November 2022 election.
