Prime Minister Balen Shah has called a meeting of the Constitutional Council.
According to the prime minister’s secretariat, the meeting has been scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 7.
Several positions, including that of the chief justice, are currently vacant.
The government recently introduced an ordinance related to the Constitutional Council. The ordinance allows decisions to be made by a majority of three members, including the prime minister.
The meeting has been called to move forward with the appointment process for the chief justice of the Supreme Court.
The council’s secretariat convened the meeting for Thursday under the direction of PM Shah, who also serves as the chair of the council, his secretariat said.
According to a letter issued by the council’s secretariat on Wednesday, the meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar.
The prime minister's secretariat said that the main agenda of the meeting is to make recommendations for the appointment of the chief justice.
The Constitutional Council consists of six members.
The council members include Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives Bhishma Raj Angdembe, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rubi Kumari Thakur.
