The Nepali Congress (NC) has finalized the names of 20 proportional representation (PR) lawmakers for the House of Representatives and sent the list to the Election Commission.
In the House of Representatives election held on March 5, the NC won 18 seats under the direct (first-past-the-post) system and 20 seats under the proportional representation system.
A meeting of the party’s central working committee held on Sunday at the central office in Sanepa, chaired by party President Gagan Thapa, decided to recommend 15 women and 5 men for the 20 PR seats, according to party spokesperson Devraj Chalise.
The list of PR candidates had originally been submitted to the Election Commission when Sher Bahadur Deuba was the party president. The 20 names have now been selected from that same list.
Spokesperson Chalise said that the Election Commission will later make public the details of those recommended under the proportional representation system.
According to him, the NC will have representation in 62 seats in the Federal Parliament, including both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.
“At least 21 of those seats must be represented by women. Therefore, while sending 20 PR lawmakers now, 15 must be women,” he said. “This is part of the election process. These names will be sent to the commission today. If there are any discrepancies in any clusters, we will correct them.”
He also said that the previously submitted list cannot be altered.
Chalise added that the party will hold a central committee meeting later this week to review the election.
